Now on it’s 77th year, the Annual Philippine Institute of Chemical Engineers (PIChE) National Student Congress and Convention was held at Boracay Ecovillage Resort and Convention Center, Boracay, Malay, Aklan, last February 17-20, 2016.

Student teams from the Department of Chemical Engineering at UP Diliman went and bagged back-to-back championships at the PIChE National Student Congress. The team composed of Salvador Marrod Cruz, Dave Ramos, John Andrew Kane Jovellana, led by team captain Ariel Raye Rica, won 1st place at the PIChE National Quiz Bowl, besting 14 other teams from across the nation in a 3-round, 30-question, time-pressured battle of wits. The questions include both conceptual and problem solving types from various fields of Chemical Engineering. The UP Diliman team garnered a total of 220 points, while Batangas State University came 2nd with 140 points, and Colegio San Agustin – Bacolod came to a close 3rd with 135 points. The team was coached by Asst. Prof. Karl Ezra Pilario, Asst. Prof. Jhud Mikhail Aberilla, and Engr. Kenneth Robert de Guzman.

Meanwhile, in the PIChE National Undergraduate Research Competition, the UP Diliman research team composed of Charlene de Guzman, John Andrew Kane Jovellana, and Monica Trivino, with adviser, Rizalinda de Leon, also won 1st place, besting 5 other team finalists from other schools. Their research is entitled: “Photocatalytic Hydrogen Production from Seawater using Ag2O-TiO2 under Visible Light Irradiation”. The six finalists who presented in the contest venue were pre-screened from 19 research entries coming from different schools nationwide.
