Inauguration of the Fluor Plant Design Laboratory

QUEZON CITY – In line with the commitment of the UP Diliman Department of Chemical Engineering (DChE) to produce world-class chemical engineering graduates, we are happy to announce the inauguration of the new Plant Design Laboratory (PDLab) at the Chemical Engineering Building, Room C206, last June 16, 2016.

The creation of the PDLab is one of the key milestones in the partnership of the UP College of Engineering with Fluor Daniel Inc., Philippines (Fluor). Gracing us at the occasion are Dr. Aura C. Matias (Dean, COE), Engr. Alfonso Aliga, Jr., (President, UP ERDFI, Inc.), and Dr. Rizalinda de Leon (Chair, DChE). Esteemed representatives from Fluor include James Wilkins (General Manager), Eric Tanjutco (Engineering Manager), Jonathan Alvarez (Process Engineer), and Lawrence Sumera (Process Engineer). Other faculty members of DChE and HR representatives (Elbert Olaes and Nina Kristen Alvarez-Tupalar) from Fluor also attended the ceremony.

Through the generous support of Fluor, the PDLab is furnished with new computer workstations that can cater to a class of 18 students. The air-conditioned room also includes LAN connection, teaching facilities, and new furniture.

Computers at the PDLab are currently equipped with AspenONE® for Universities. Aspen Technology Inc. (AspenTech) is a solutions provider for the process industries. The software package includes Aspen HYSYS® v.8 and Aspen Plus® v.8, both for steady-state and dynamic simulation, among other AspenTech products for plant economic evaluation, equipment design and rating, flowsheeting and control. Over 700 universities of the world are now using the same software.

When the PDLab becomes fully operational in the first semester of AY 2016-2017, chemical engineering students can avail of its facilities for plant design, equipment design, and process simulation purposes. The PDLab will also house a new elective class for senior students: ChE 198 (Computer-aided Process Engineering).

In the future, DChE hopes to open the PDLab to other UP engineering students such as electrical engineers, civil engineers, mechanical engineers, etc., as it acquires new software for real-world conceptual plant design. It is envisioned that future senior process design projects at the UP College of Engineering will be endeavored by inter-disciplinary engineering teams at the PDLab.
