We are thrilled to share the good news that the UP Department of Chemical Engineering (UP DChE) is the recipient of the prestigious 2023 National Research Council of the Philippines (NRCP) Outstanding Institution Award (Cluster II)! This award is given to outstanding institutions in recognition of their dedicated support and/or significant contribution to the advancement of basic sciences, humanities, and the arts in the Philippines, with the following evaluation criteria: (1) publications in refereed and reputable journals (50%); (2) external linkages and extension services, including support to policy formulation (20%); (3) research or service awards and recognitions received (15%); and (4) number of undergraduate and graduate students trained or number of personnel trained (15%).
Dedicated to fostering the development of ethical engineers and leaders, UP DChE stands out as a symbol of excellence. In recent years, it has consistently proven to be one of the most prolific degree-granting and research units in the Philippines, exemplifying a commitment to both academic rigor and ethical values.
The Department offers comprehensive undergraduate and graduate chemical engineering programs, serving a vibrant community of about 400 undergraduate and 50 graduate students. Courses are taught by a group of high-caliber full-time and part-time faculty members, with an impressive 67% holding doctorate degrees, many of whom have undergone training abroad. Notably, the Department has been awarded as the top-performing school in six consecutive professional licensure examinations for chemical engineers.
The Department’s commitment to advancing knowledge is reflected in the over five hundred (500) scientific articles published by faculty members and students in reputable peer-reviewed journals over the past 10 years. And with ongoing research projects worth over P240M, the Department is at the forefront of delivering innovative and sustainable solutions to technological challenges impacting society, government, and industry. The Department is also hosting three DOST Balik scientists, reinforcing its commitment to strengthening science and technology capabilities and promoting knowledge-sharing in the country. Through engineering research projects, the Department caters to the needs of specific companies in the field of power, chemicals, and waste management. Even amidst the pandemic, the Department actively collaborated with the UP College of Engineering, UP Engineering Research and Development Foundation, Inc. (ERDFI), and UP Alumni Engineers in three engineering projects addressing the COVID-19 threat. Faculty members also provide techno-economic assistance to government agencies such as the Department of Energy (DOE) and the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) in formulating and implementing policies.
The Department’s regular seminars and career panel discussions, featuring speakers (mostly alumni) from various sectors of the society, serve as a valuable platform to inspire students and facilitate their interaction with professionals. These give students the opportunity to gain valuable insights into various fields, empowering them to explore potential opportunities after graduation.
With these achievements, the Department continues to envision itself as a beacon of academic excellence in chemical engineering, contributing to national progress and global innovation through our commitment to teaching, research, and extension services.
